Suffragans of Bacolod, San Jose de Antique, San Carlos, Kabankalan
The Archdiocese of Jaro is the fifth oldest diocese in the country. It was
created a diocese by virtue of a papal bull of Pope Pius IX on May 27, 1865.
Bishop Mariano Cuartero, a Dominican, took possession of the diocese
on April 25, 1868. The new diocese then included the entire island of
Panay (today’s Capiz, Aklan, Iloilo and Antique provinces), Negros Island,
Romblon and Palawan in the Visayas; Jolo, Zamboanga, Cotabato and
Davao in the island of Mindanao. This vast territory was later divided to
form new ecclesiastical jurisdictions: Zamboanga in 1910, Bacolod in 1933,
Capiz in 1951 and San Jose de Antique in 1962.
On June 29, 1951, a papal bull by His Holiness Pope Pius XII raised Jaro
to an Archdiocese which comprises the civil Province and City of Iloilo and
Province of Guimaras. The suffragans of the archdiocese are the dioceses
of Bacolod, San Jose de Antique, San Carlos and Kabankalan.

OSE ROMEO ORQUEJO LAZO, DD
Sixth Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Jaro
The Archbishop was born on January 23, 1949 in San Jose
de Buena vista, Antique, to Juan P. Lazo and Fausta Orquejo,
both deceased, and was baptized on February 13 of the
same year at the St. Joseph Parish of the same town.
He was appointed Bishop of Kalibo by St. Pope John
Paul II on Novem ber 15, 2003 and assumed office after
he was ordained bishop by His Excellency, Antonio Franco, DD, Apostolic
Nuncio to the Philippines, toge ther with the co-ordaining bishops’ Their
Excellencies Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo, DD and Most Rev. Romulo T.
de la Cruz, DD, on December 29, 2003.
On July 21, 2009 the Most Rev. Jose Romeo O. Lazo, DD was appointed
as the fourth Bishop of Antique by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.
On February 14, 2018, Pope Francis appointed him as the
6th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Jaro, taking possessions of the See on April
17, 2018.
