if anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, among this adulterous and sinful people, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him,
when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
And he went on to say, “Truly I tell you, there are some here who will not die before they see the kingdom of God coming with power.”
REFLECTION:
Today, we have a harsh rebuke of Jesus explaining how he chooses to live as the Messiah. Poor Peter! Poor us!
When will we understand the simplicity of God’s love?
When will we pass from the notion that suffering is bad to the notion that life is a gift and to give calls for suffering?
Let us be clear: God does not love suffering. But, sometimes, we perform acts that call for a renunciation, a death, and therefore,
suffering becomes a measure of love and commitment. Every disciple, like the Master, is called to love until he loses himself.
Taking the cross and denying oneself is not a form of mystical self harm but a life proposition that contradicts the worldly logic of self-realization.
Too often, our world offers a kind of idolatry of the self. Jesus proposes a better one:
to realize ourselves as a gift means openness and acceptance to the paradox of finding by losing oneself for others.
