Because of this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus answered them, “You say that you believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has
come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me
alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
I have told you all this, so that in me you may have peace. You will have trouble in
the world; but, courage! I have overcome the world.”
Reflect
In the early years of the Church, one of the symbols used to represent Christ was
an anchor. An anchor helps to keep a boat from drifting away due to currents or storms,
In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ message to his disciples is that he will be their anchors
throughout the storms of life. Jesus does not promise that our lives will be perfect
and troublefree if we follow him. In fact, the opposite is true. Following Jesus requires
that we follow him even to the cross. The world will hate us and we will know suffering
and pain. But through it all, Jesus will be our anchor, our peace, and our ultimate victory.
Jesus has destroyed death through his Resurrection. It no longer has power over him
or over those he has called to himself. Jesus promises that we will pass through the
storms and come to heaven if we are anchored in him.
